Philip, a white man with glasses and increasingly greying hair, smiles at the camera

I mentor client teams as part of my consultancy and offer a limited number of pro-bono sessions for individuals looking to advance their career in design.

Anna Whyte
Senior Product Designer at Doctify

“Philip is proactive, thoughtful and skilful. He takes the time to help others improve, from helpful snippets of advice to longer form tutorials. It has been a pleasure to work with Philip, he is knowledgeable and nice - the perfect combo!”

Approach

I try to build genuine connection with my mentees and create a psychologically safe space where we can learn from mutual vulnerability. I don’t profess to have all the answers but openly share my experiences and reflections from over a decade practicing design.

Expertise

I began my design career from a traditional background, studying product design at Glasgow School of Art before landing my first design role at Method. As such, I don't have experience entering the industry without formal training or transitioning from another field. Nonetheless, I welcome mentees from diverse backgrounds and will strive to provide valuable guidance.

Example topics I mentor on:

  • Design for early stage start-ups

  • Design for healthcare and enterprise use cases

  • Design for behaviour change

  • Design for privacy and building trust

  • Experiment driven product development

  • Brand positioning for growth

  • Qualitative research tactics

  • Cross-functional collaboration

  • Service design

Maeve Breslin
Head of Product Design at Thredd

“Philip has that unique combination of experience and empathy that means he can expertly guide you while also making you feel confident in yourself. Philip made me feel at ease and was able to help me unpack what I couldn't articulate well.”

Oli Wright
Product Designer

“I came to Philip feeling overwhelmed with a stack of questions on how to approach my first week at a new job. I left the conversation not only with thoughtfully articulated answers to all my questions but also with a sense of "I've got this". Philip was calm and considered in his approach but incredibly on-point with his advice.”

Nathaniel Stewart
Product Designer

“Philip is on point. His extensive background gives him the wisdom to pinpoint areas for improvement and prescribe solutions. He also gave me some sage advice on what hiring managers might be looking for when viewing a portfolio, and we touched on how to translate that into a presentation in an interview setting.”
